WHAT TO EXPECT

Beginning psychoanalytic treatment.

The first conversation is an opportunity to begin thinking together about what brings you here and whether working together feels right.

Starting with your experience

You do not need to arrive with a clear explanation of what is wrong. You might know exactly what has been troubling you, or you might only have a sense that familiar ways of living and relating are no longer working as you would like.

Our initial meetings offer a chance to discuss your concerns, your hopes for treatment, and what a psychoanalytic approach may offer. We can also address practical questions about sessions and fees.

What sessions are like

I listen closely, ask questions, and sometimes offer observations about patterns that seem important. There may be moments of silence, strong feelings, disagreement, or humor. None of these needs to be treated as a failure of the work; each may help us understand something that is otherwise difficult to put into words.

For couples

We will explore how each person's history shapes their expectations and how those expectations meet in the relationship. The process is adapted to the couple; it does not require a single prescribed sequence or that both partners begin separate individual treatment with me.

Change takes shape over time

Psychoanalytic work is not a set of quick solutions. It can help make emotional experiences more understandable and expand the range of ways you can respond to them. We will continue to think together about what is changing and what remains difficult.
